Calligraphy... That Special Touch
by Linda Skaggs

Your wedding invitation is the formal announcement of your and your fiancé’s intention to become man and wife. It is the first impression your guests receive regarding your special day, and sets the tone for your ceremony and reception. Your attention to detail and style lets your guests know how important this day is to you. Having your invitations hand addressed in calligraphy is the perfect way to inform your guests they are being invited to a very special event…your wedding!

Calligraphy makes a beautiful presentation and can be used to compliment the most formal of invitations or “dress up” an otherwise plain envelope. There are many different styles of calligraphy, from the formal Old English to flowing romantic scripts. A professional, experienced calligrapher can help you decide what style best coordinates with both your invitations and your personal tastes.

Traditionally, invitations are addressed in black ink. You may, however, decide to take a more unique approach and coordinate the ink with the colors you are using to accent your wedding. Let your personality and style come through, after all it is YOUR special day. Remember though, there are definitely certain guidelines that need to be followed when addressing your invitations. A professional calligrapher will know exactly how to address invitations to married and unmarried couples, single, divorced and widowed females, families, couples who have doctorial degrees (husband, wife or both) and clergy members. A calligrapher can also advise you on what abbreviations are appropriate as far as titles, street names, cities and states, as well as knowing how far in advance of your wedding to mail your invitations.

The special touch of calligraphy can carry through from the invitations to other parts of your rehearsal, wedding and reception. Name tags for the wedding party and family members can help those meeting at the rehearsal dinner for the first time remember names and family relationships. A hand lettered program cover will enhance your ceremony. Place cards and table assignments for your guests at the rehearsal dinner and reception will save time and confusion. Calligraphy can add a special touch to the front page of your guest book, keepsake book or your photography album. Your wedding party will appreciate receiving personalized gifts with their names on them. Wedding favors can be made more unique with the bride and groom’s names and wedding date printed in calligraphy.

Your wedding will be a treasured memory in the lives of you and your spouse, as well as family members and friends. Let calligraphy add that special touch to record your memories in a permanent way.
